No, you are going to need to make a good first impression, which isn’t always the easiest thing in the world to do. Simply put, you cannot prepare yourself for a multiple choice test when you are answering essays. Fear not though because this guide will help you prepare yourself for your next interview.

Prep Tip #1: Know The Job You Are Applying For

Not only do you need to know and understand the company that you are applying to, but you need to understand the type of job they are looking to fill. Sure, the ad might say night watchman or handyman, but what does that entail? Does that mean that you are going to be responsible for patrolling the grounds? Does that mean that you will be maintaining equipment around the complex?

Know everything you can about the position. It might turn out that the job isn’t what you thought after all. This approach will also give you an idea of what the company is looking for as well.

Prep Tip #2: Mix And Match

Now that you know what the company is looking for you will be able to match your assets to their requirements. Sit down, jot down all the requirements and qualifications for the job, and next to it write down all your assets. When you are done compare the two and see how you match up. Do you have the skills that the company is looking for? Are you qualified enough? This is not only a good tactic to get you pumped up for the job, but it will give you are starting point with the employer. You will already have half your resume right there.

Prep Tip #3: Do A Mock Interview

There is simply no better way to prepare for an interview than by going through a mock interview. Thanks to apps like Skype and Face Time companies are able to interview employees right on the spot. Even if you are interviewing for an out of town job. Most companies will usually give you a day or two at least, but some can spring an interview right on you. Some might even surprise you by asking questions that completely throw you off. Go online, do some research on sites like algrim.co, and study up on interview questions.

Prep Tip #4: Get Your Outfit Ready

Unfortunately, you are going to be judged by your looks. This doesn’t mean that you need to be the best looking ham sandwich in hungry town. No, it just means that you need to look the part. This is where research on the company can come in handy. You can usually tell when an interview is going to be formal or informal. Sometimes the interviewer will tell you straight out if the interview is formal or informal. However, there might be times when the interviewer doesn’t mention this.

This is where it helps to know the company and the type of job that you are applying for. If you are applying for an office type job or a job that involves constant face to face communication with customers, you can rest assured that you will want to dress formally.

If the company is more laid back, you might be able to get away with dressing down a bit. That being said, you always want to make sure that your clothes are out and prepared at least one or two days before the scheduled interview. Never wait until the last minute to lay out your clothes because anything can go wrong.

Prep Tip #5: Know What To Bring

Most people show up to an interview looking their best while being empty-handed at the same time. Sure, it is important to look good, but that alone is not enough. Make sure that you bring essential items with you. Bring a copy of your resume, bring a business card, be prepared with questions to ask, and cut that cell phone off before entering the building.
